A Few More Scams for Elders to Avoid

Continuing with the theme of our previous post, one of the best ways to protect elders from fraud and exploitation is to help them maintain a keener awareness of the most common scams.

Our previous post listed five of the most common cons. Here are a few more:

  • Roof repair, yard work, home repair scams
  • Telemarketing scams and accompanying threats
  • Predatory Lending
  • Investment/securities schemes – pyramid schemes; unrealistic returns promised; dealer is not licensed
  • Internet phishing – false emails about bank accounts
  • Identity theft – credit cards opened fraudulently, etc.
  • Medicare scams – these are the costliest in terms of the dollar amounts
